10 Simple Ways to Brain Tune Up

Have you ever felt exasperated when you bumped into someone at the store but absolutely couldn’t remember their name? Sure, it happens to all of us.

Despite being the strongest computer on the planet, our brains do lapse. It’s hard to blame them really. As humans, we spend much of or existence stuffing our brains with stuff. Some stuff is worthless, some of it’s meaningful, some of it, well, it’s just stuff and there is an endless amount of it.

No matter how powerful our brains are, they need recuperation time, to be kept in shape, and even an occasional charge. Think of it as a tune up for your brain. Skipping brain maintenance is as silly as the person wandering the parking garage because they forgot where they parked. Is that you? Are you that person? Sure. We all are at some point. No worries, there is hope.

Here are some things you can begin doing as soon as today to begin the great brain tune up.

1) Eat Almonds

Almond is believed to improve memory. If a combination of almond oil and milk is taken together before going to bed or after getting up at morning, it strengthens our memory power. Almond milk is prepared by crushing the almonds without the outer cover and adding water and sugar to it.

2) Drink Apple Juice
Research from the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) indicates that apple juice increases the production of the essential neurotransmitte r acetylcholine in the brain, resulting in an increased memory power.

3) Sleep well
Research indicates that the long-term memory is consolidated during sleep by replaying the images of the experiences of the day. These repeated playbacks program the subconscious mind to store these images and other related information.

4) Enjoy simple Pleasures
Stress drains our brainpower. A stress-ridden mind consumes much of our memory resources to leave us with a feeble mind. Make a habit to engage yourself in few simple pleasures everyday to dissolve stress from your mind. Some of these simple pleasures are good for your mind, body and soul.

5) Fast for a day
Fasting cleans and detoxifies our body. It is known fact that heavy food not only causes stress on our digestive system but also drains our brainpower. Fasting relieves toxic emotions such as anger, grief, worry, and fears – before they accumulate and cause disease. By cleansing toxic emotions, fasting strengthens metal clarity with increases memory, concentration, creativity and insight.

6) Exercise your mind
Just as physical exercise is essential for a strong body, mental exercise is equally essential for a sharp and agile mind. Have you noticed that children have far superior brainpower than an adult does? Children have playful minds. A playful mind exhibits superior memory power. Engage in some of the activities that require your mind to remain active and playful.

Play scrabble or crossword puzzle, Volunteer, Interact with others, Start a new hobby such as blogging, reading, painting, bird watching, Learn new skill or a language

7) Practice Yoga or Meditation
Yoga or Meditation relives stress. Stress is a known memory buster. With less stress, lower blood pressure, slower respiration, slower metabolism, and released muscle tension follows. All of these factors contribute significantly towards increases in our brainpower.

8 ) Eat whole wheat
The whole wheat germs contain lecithin. Lecithin helps ease the problem of thehardening of the arteries, which often impairs brain functioning.

9) Develop imagination

Greeks mastered the principle of imagination and association to memorize everything. This technique requires one to develop a vivid and colorful imagination that can be linked to a known object. If you involve all your senses – touching, feeling, smelling, hearing and seeing in the imagination process, youcan remember greater details of the event.

10 ) Control your temper
Bleached food, excess of starch or excess of white bread can lead to nerve grating effect. This results in a violent and some time depressive behavior. Eat fresh vegetables. Drink lots of water and meditate or practice yoga to relieve these toxic emotions of temper and violent mood swings.

8 Ways to Treat An Eye Injury

A minor eye injury can be uncomfortable and distressing. The human eye is an amazingly fine tuned machine with many subtleties. If the injury is serious, you should seek medical treatment immediately. If you feel you have a minor injury and want to treat it at home, the following eight tips will prove useful.

Wash Your Hands
When touching your eye, make sure to use only clean hands, swabs and bandages when treating the eye. If the injury was sustained under circumstances in which infectious bacteria or fungi are likely present (such as a cat scratch), you should see a doctor immediately.
Remove the Irritant
Flushing is ideal for removing most substances. Generally, only a professional should use swabs or anasthetic in the eye.
Don't Rub!
This is especially important if you think it is possible that foreign material may still be present in the eye. A very small amount of dust or dirt could easily scratch the cornea if rubbed in through the eyelid.
Keep It Clean
The most dangerous aspect of a minor eye injury is the possibility of infection. Some bacteria and fungi can cause permanent vision impairment or even complete blindness within 1-2 days. Continue to wash your hands thoroughly as you may touch the irritated area inadvertently during the healing process.
Get Some Sleep
Rest is what a minor eye injury is likely to need most so, if possible, catch some Z's and you may awake to find the pain has passed.
Cover or Close the Eye
The cover should be loose fitting (not a patch) to minimize risk of infection. A paper cup that is carefully taped on should work. This is really the best option if you can't sleep.
Minimize Light Exposure
If it is not possible to sleep or cover the eye, you might lower the light levels in order to give the eye a break and reduce squinting. Extreme light sensitivity that does not subside may be a sign that the scratch is too serious to forgo a doctor's treatment.
Be Safe, Not Sorry!
If you are experiencing swelling, puffiness, extreme redness, bleeding, or if you think the cornea may actually be scratched, loosely cover the injured eye and seek medical attention immediately. If there are chemicals involved (anything abrasive, acid, alkaline, even chalk dust) rinse the eye for fifteen minutes and get to a doctor. The eye is one of the most complex and delicate organs in the body so don't take chances with your vision.                    Source

10 Health Benefits of Apples

Bone Protection:French researchers found that a flavanoid called phloridzin that is found only in apples may protect post-menopausal women from osteoporosis and may also increase bone density. Boron, another ingredient in apples, also strengthens bones.

Asthma Help: One recent study shows that children with asthma who drank apple juice on a daily basis suffered from less wheezing than children who drank apple juice only once per month. Another study showed that children born to women who eat a lot of apples during pregnancy have lower rates of asthma than children whose mothers ate few apples.

Alzheimer's Prevention: A study on mice at Cornell University found that the quercetin in apples may protect brain cells from the kind of free radical damage that may lead to Alzheimer's disease.

Lower Cholesterol: The pectin in apples lowers LDL ("bad") cholesterol. People who eat two apples per day may lower their cholesterol by as much as 16 percent.

Lung Cancer Prevention: According to a study of 10,000 people, those who ate the most apples had a 50 percent lower risk of developing lung cancer. Researchers believe this is due to the high levels of the flavonoids quercetin and naringin in apples.

Breast Cancer Prevention: A Cornell University study found that rats who ate one apple per day reduced their risk of breast cancer by 17 percent. Rats fed three apples per day reduced their risk by 39 percent and those fed six apples per day reduced their risk by 44 percent.
Colon Cancer Prevention One study found that rats fed an extract from apple skins had a 43 percent lower risk of colon cancer. Other research shows that the pectin in apples reduces the risk of colon cancer and helps maintain a healthy digestive tract.

Liver Cancer Prevention: Research found that rats fed an extract from apple skins had a 57 percent lower risk of liver cancer.

Diabetes Management: The pectin in apples supplies galacturonic acid to the body which lowers the body's need for insulin and may help in the management of diabetes.

Weight Loss: A Brazilian study found that women who ate three apples or pears per day lost more weight while dieting than women who did not eat fruit while dieting.

Triple Your Fitness Gains—Without Training Harder

Impatience can be a virtue. Performing lots of interval training one week each month improves your fitness more than spacing out the sessions, reports a new study in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports.
In the study, one group of male cyclists did two high-intensity interval-training sessions per week for 4 weeks. Another group knocked out five sessions in the first week, then one session per week for the rest of the month. Each group also included steady cardio sessions. The key: Everyone did the same number of workouts. “The only difference was the way of organizing the training,” says lead study author Bent Ronnestad, Ph.D.
At the end of the month, the front-loaders increased their VO2 max—a key measure of aerobic fitness—by 8.8 percent, compared to a 2.9 percent increase in the other group. They also saw a bigger improvement in their power output during a 40-minute bike ride.
The researchers suspect that the effects may stem from increased production of human growth hormone, which may indirectly improve VO2 max. Interval training has already been shown to temporarily increase levels of HGH. But the researchers speculate when athletes’ bodies are hit with multiple interval sessions, the body may begin to recognize the elevated levels of HGH as its norm, making lasting impacts on fitness.

Train smarter, not harder: Pack the first week of each month with five interval training sessions. Try 5 minutes of hard effort and 3 minutes of easy effort, repeated four to six times. For rest the month, do one interval workout plus several lower-intensity workouts. If you’re training for a specific event, use this schedule for three months prior to your race.

Syria cut off from internet

Technology companies which monitor web traffic have reported that Syria is now effectively cut off from the Internet.
Akamai, one of the firms which monitors global traffic, said traffic stopped from 1026 GMT (2126 AEDT) on Thursday, and that this supports the observation from another IT firm, Renesys, 'that Syria is effectively off the internet'.
According to activists, sudden communication cuts regularly occur before major military offensives.
An EgyptAir official in Cairo said the airline had cancelled its Friday flight to Damascus because of deteriorated security at the airport and a breakdown in communication with its office there.
In Dubai, Emirates said it suspended flights to Damascus after the airport road was blocked by the clashes.
'Emirates has suspended all flights to and from Damascus effective immediately and until further notice,' a spokesperson for the company said.
Regime forces have regularly carried out air strikes on this area, in an attempt to dislodge rebels from their rear bases in the orchards on the outskirts of the capital.
The goal of the army is to take full control of the capital and a radius of eight kilometers around it, a Syrian security official told AFP.
The authorities in the morning closed the airport road, located 27 kilometres from the centre of Damascus, and which passes through the embattled Eastern Ghouta region.
Syrian troops have meanwhile launched a major offensive in southeastern Damascus along the airport road, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says, after earlier reporting the route had been closed.
The army attacked rebel strongholds in a string of towns along the highway and near the airport, Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP by phone. State media also reported operations in the area.
The fighting, which came after internet links went down across most of Syria, caused EgyptAir and Emirates to announce the cancellation of flights to Damascus.
The heaviest clashes erupted between troops and rebels in the towns of Babila and Hujaira southeast of the capital and in Harran al-Awamid, just east of the airport, the Observatory said, adding that army reinforcements had been sent to the area.
Official media also reported operations in the province and said several members of an 'armed terrorist group, Al-Nusra Front' had been killed in the town of Aqraba.
The army also went on the offensive across the eastern outer belt of the capital, notably in the towns of Harasta and Douma and in Eastern Ghuta, the Observatory said.

Palestine wins UN observer-state vote

The United Nations has voted overwhelmingly to recognise a Palestinian state.
The resolution upgrading the Palestinians' status to a nonmember observer state at the United Nations was approved by a more than two-thirds majority of the 193-member world body - a vote of 138-9, with 41 abstentions.
A Palestinian flag was quickly unfurled on the floor of the General Assembly, behind the Palestinian delegation.
In the West Bank city of Ramallah, hundreds crowded into the main square and waved Palestinian flags and chanted "God is great".
Others who had crowded around outdoor screens and television sets to watch the vote hugged and set off fireworks before dancing in the streets.
Real independence, however, remains an elusive dream until the Palestinians negotiate a peace deal with the Israelis, who warned that the General Assembly action would delay a lasting solution.
Israel still controls the West Bank, east Jerusalem and access to Gaza, and it accused the Palestinians of bypassing negotiations with the campaign to upgrade their UN status.
The United States criticised the historic vote. "Today's unfortunate and counterproductive resolution places further obstacles in the path peace," US ambassador at the UN Ambassador Susan Rice said.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called the vote "unfortunate" and "counterproductive."
The United States and Israel voted against recognition, joined by Canada, the Czech Republic, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Panama.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the speech by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to the General Assembly shortly before the vote "defamatory and venomous", saying it was "full of mendacious propaganda" against Israel. He called the vote meaningless.
Abbas had told the General Assembly it was "being asked today to issue the birth certificate of Palestine".
Abbas said the vote was the last chance to save the two-state solution.
After the vote, Netanyahu said the UN move violated past agreements between Israel and the Palestinians and that Israel would act accordingly.
It has previously hinted at an economic reaction.
Just before the vote, Israel's UN ambassador, Ron Prosor, warned the General Assembly that "the Palestinians are turning their backs on peace" and that the UN can't break the 4000-year-old bond between the people of Israel and the land of Israel.
The vote had been certain to succeed, with most of the member states sympathetic to the Palestinians. Several countries, including France, this week announced they would support the move to elevate the Palestinians from the status of UN observer to nonmember observer state.
Thursday's vote came on the same date, November 29, that the UN General Assembly in 1947 voted to recognise a state in Palestine, with the jubilant revellers then Jews. The Palestinians rejected that partition plan, and decades of tension and violence have followed.
The vote grants Abbas an overwhelming international endorsement for his key position: establishment of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, the territories captured by Israel in the 1967 six-day war.
The vote could help Abbas restore some of his standing, which has been eroded by years of standstill in peace efforts.
His rival, Hamas, deeply entrenched in Gaza, has seen its popularity rise in that time.
The Palestinians now can gain access to UN agencies and international bodies, most significantly the International Criminal Court.
In the run-up to the UN vote, Abbas signalled that he wanted recognition to give him leverage in future talks with Israel, and not as a tool for confronting or delegitimising Israel, as Israeli leaders have alleged.

Burma cracks down on mine protest

Security forces have used water cannons, tear gas and smoke bombs to clear protesters from a copper mine in northwestern Myanmar (Burma).
Villagers and Buddhist monks were injured in the violence, which was the biggest use of force against demonstrators since the reformist government of President Thein Sein took office last year.
Opposition Leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who arrived in the area on a previously scheduled visit, said she would try to negotiate a solution.
In a statement broadcast on state television, the government initially acknowledged using the riot-control measures but denied using excessive force. In an unusual move, it later retracted the statement without explanation.
Monks and other protesters had serious burns after the crackdown at the Letpadaung mine near the town of Monywa. Protesters who oppose the mine's impact on villagers and the environment had occupied the area for 11 days.
'I didn't expect to be treated like this, as we were peacefully protesting,' said Aung Myint Htway, a peanut farmer whose face and body were covered with black patches of burned skin.
The police action is a public relations and political disaster for Thein Sein's government, which has been touting its transition to democracy after almost five decades of repressive military rule.
'This is unacceptable,' said Ottama Thara, a 25-year-old monk who was at the protest. 'This kind of violence should not happen under a government that says it is committed to democratic reforms.'
Police moved early on Thursday to disperse protesters after some heeded earlier warnings to leave.
'Around 2.30am police announced they would give us five minutes to leave,' Aung Myint Htway said. He said police fired water cannons first and then shot what he and others called flare guns.
'They fired black balls that exploded into fire sparks. They shot about six times. People ran away and they followed us,' he said, still writhing hours later from pain. 'It's very hot.'
Photos of the wounded monks showed they had serious burns on parts of their bodies. It was unclear what sort of weapon caused them, or whether the burns were caused by their shelters catching fire from whatever devices police used.
